**Note: This little rant has been brought on by a parent's meeting I attended this week. I am not a teacher but my husband used to be. Hopefully you know all of this.:)

Thirteen Things Some Parents Do Not Understand About the School System

1...It is a really GOOD thing when teachers use additional materials, above and beyond the textbooks.

2...Teachers and Administrators are between a Rock and a Hard Place when it comes to student behavior.

3...It is a sad fact that there must be standardization - the Needs of the Many outweigh the Needs of the Few or the One.

4...Because there are standardized exams that have to be passed, schools teach TO the exams. Anything else they learn is a bonus.

5...Most but not all teachers and administrators truly care about your kids or they would not be there, doing what they are doing. They do not get paid near enough.

6...Teachers and Administrators need your support, not just your criticism.

7...Teachers, contrary to popular belief, do not get June, July and August off. Usually, if they are lucky, they get about a month - month and a half without inservices, classroom prep, and summer school related activities.

8...Teachers do not work 8 to 3. They usually work long hours at school and then take their work home with them.

9...Teachers pay for most 'extras' for their students (like incentives, classroom decor, treats, etc.) out of their own pockets.

10..It is NOT all about the scores. Progress is what counts often as much as the scores themselves.

11..Teachers do like to be appreciated. Sincere thanks goes as far (or further) than a physical gift.

12..Teachers want you to communicate with them about your child - consider the 3 of you a team!

13..You still need to PARENT your children!
